BRIEF HISTORY:
In 1719, Maria Aurora was established as a mission village under the name Mision de
San Jose de Casecnan by Fray Sebastian de la Madre de Dios to christianize the headhunting
tribe of Ilongots. Jose Bitong and Benito Silvestre were known to be the pioneers of Maria
Aurora. Bitong who married the daughter of an Ilongot chieftain later became the first
capitan del pueblo.
In November 1901, Mision de San Jose de Casecnan (Maria Aurora), together with Mision de San Miguel (Dipaculao), was made part of the Province of Tayabas by military Governor Cornelius Gardener. On July 21, 1949, Executive Order No. 249 was signed into law by President Elpidio R. Quirino creating the municipality of Maria Aurora. The name was adopted in memory of Maria Aurora “Baby” Quezon who died with her mother, Doña Aurora, in an ambush on April 28, 1949.
Pedro C. Montero was appointed mayor who served from July 21, 1949 to December 31, 1951, and Pedro L. Wenceslao became the first elected mayor from January 1, 1951 to June 21, 1958.
